Ongoing Learning

ESOL

What is ESOL?

ESOL stands for English for Speakers of Other Languages. It is a term for educational programs designed to help people whose first language is not English improve their English language skills.

ESOL Read Write Spell

Receive targeted learning based on your needs, seeking to improve your reading, writing and spelling. We also use listening, speaking and pronunciation tasks to achieve this. This is a lively and dynamic class environment with a lot of class discussion and discourse

ESOL Conversation

ESOL Conversation focuses on balancing your English conversation skills by looking at grammatical structures and vocabulary and applying them to everyday situations. Flex your new skills by practicing with classmates and tutors as you gain confidence in discussing subjects including NZ based topics and current affairs.

Phonological Awareness

Deepen your understanding of syllables and individual sounds in words to improve punctuation and spelling. Play games to practice your vocabulary, pronunciation and spelling.

Beginner English

Working in small groups, our English classes offer targeted language learning. Each group of students is unique and the learning goals are tailored to its needs.

English 1

Speak and understand everyday English words and short conversations in small groups. Learn your ABC and the sounds of letters, how to introduce yourself and fill out a form, ask simple questions and say how you feel. Grow your confidence by singing English songs and speaking with your classmates.

English 2

Develop your understanding of basic sentence structures and spelling in small groups. Talk about themes like family, weather and food using simple but accurate sentences. Express how you feel with more depth, ask questions and become familiar with different tenses and English word types.

English 3

Improve grammar, vocabulary, word order and spelling by refining difficult English sounds. In small groups, listen to short conversations and stories, read forms, signs, stories, news and emails, make appointments and talk on the phone. Learn and sing a Kiwi song, and talk more about language and cultural groups in Aotearoa New Zealand.

English 4

Refine your understanding and accuracy when speaking and writing, and work on the four skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. Bring questions to class based on your own experiences with English and develop your vocabulary and understanding of grammatical structures through class discussion.
